Variety: Chicken Surfers/Shut Up and Surf

Chicken Surfers is about 6 Korean "celebrities" who go to Bali for surfing, but the caveat is that they are only given 100 chickens, which they must use to exchange for whatever they need (mainly food and surfboard rentals) in those 7 days.
The Korean name is dalk chi go surfing (닭치고 서핑), where dalk chi go = shut up but dalk = chicken.

The 6 people are - Park Joon-hyung from legendary boy group g.o.d, Kahi the ex-leader of After School, Lee Su-geun the comedian, Hyun Woo the actor, Maeng Ki-yong the chef and Ye Jung-hwa who is a.... fitness instructor (?) who joined in episode 3. I have no idea who she is hence I put the celebrities in inverted commas.

I started watching this because of Kahi whom I've been a big fan of since 6 years ago. This actually aired in October to November 2015 for 8 episodes, so I'm a bit late. There's no english subs since most people have never even heard of the show so I watched it raw again. Sigh.

You would think that 8 episodes on surfing would be boring but it somehow isn't. About half the show is them surfing, while the other half is them trying to exchange their chickens for necessities and their struggle to prepare every meal.

The chickens were just let loose on their lodging so they were super annoying leaving shit everywhere AND the cast had to catch the chickens which isn't an easy task. But more fun for viewers haha.

The chicken exchange parts are really hilarious because it's ridiculous. Joon-hyung is really good at bargaining and he speaks English fluently so he was in charge of buying most of the stuff.

There was also one time when Kahi suggested going to a chicken restaurant to sell the chickens in exchange for a meal which I thought was really smart.

There's a reason there is a chef on the cast, because he was in charge of preparing the meals. Although the meals they prepared weren't fanciful since the ingredients they had were mostly simple stuff like eggs, sausages, chicken on a few days, they managed to whip up different dishes everyday.

And the surfing....WOW. Every episode has at least 20 minutes of them surfing but it never gets boring. Kahi and Joon-hyung have been surfing for some time so we get loads of cool shots of them surfing. Joon-hyung has been surfing for 38 years so he's a pro and it's really fantastic to look at.

Kahi has only been learning for 3 years but she's very very passionate. As Su-geun commented, Kahi's passion for surfing is really number 1. There was this day they went to the beach at the wrong time when the waters were too rough for surfing. Kahi was so disappointed that she went back there in the morning with Joon-hyung to surf again even though she was sick and coughing really badly. (Everyone thought she went to the hospital but she was actually at the beach LOL.)

We also see the progression of Su-geun, Ki-yong and Hyun Woo from beginners who know nothing about surfing to being able to take off successfully. It looks really difficult so each successful take off is a triumph for them and this happiness and pride translates to the viewer as well.

Gorgeous shot of a successful take off by Hyun Woo
Ki-yong succeeding too, with Joon-hyung beside him.
Aww so cute.
The benefit of filming at the beach is that there are so many gorgeous shots!

The condition of the sea is also different everyday and it's really quite exciting to see them try and surf when the waves are really strong.

And omg, the beaches are really beautiful.

Now I want to go to Bali too.

I really enjoyed watching the interactions between the cast members. Most of them did not know each other before this, and there's this hilarious part in episode 1 where the first thing Joon-hyung says to everyone sans Kahi is 'What is your name?' because he's not up to date with the current celebs at all. Even to Lee Su-geun! The only reason he knew Kahi was because she used to be a backup dancer for g.o.d, but he asked her 'Since when did you become a celebrity?' LOL. He was probably joking because he subsequently said that when he was in America, he heard a song by a new group called After School so he went to search them up and was shocked to see her face come up haha.
But over the trip, they grew close very quickly and it's heartwarming to see that.
Dancing together!

Jung-hwa joined in episode 3, and frankly she left a terrible first impression on me. As she probably did on the rest of the members when the first thing she said to Su-geun was not very polite. Kahi was quite annoyed that she now had to share the room, and even more annoyed when Jung-hwa kept causing trouble like stepping into the room with her shoes that stepped on chicken shit previously (thus bringing all the shit into the room -_-) or dropping an entire can of Pringles which is super precious since they're lacking food!

But over the next few episodes, they grew closer and she became a lot more likable.

Kahi tending to Jung-hwa's wound.

Though I still don't know why Jung-hwa claims to have been surfing for 4 years but hardly managed a successful take off the entire show lol. There was also this side arc about Jung-hwa being in a love triangle with Ki-yong and Hyun Woo but it wasn't really of my interest haha.

I really liked the little family they formed. Joon-hyung was like the dad, along with Su-geun. Kahi was really like the mum of the group because of her age and general awesomeness at everything. And the 3 of them would gossip over the 3 kids with their love triangle haha.

At the end of episode 7, they decided to use 1 of their 3 chances to get a surfboard for Joon-hyung and that was really emotional because it was such a nice gesture and he was so so so touched.

After they finished their challenge, they got a reward to go to a beautiful resort!

Personal pool in the resort!
