Drama Views - Hogu's Love (2015)

Hogu's Love is about Hogu (Choi Woo Sik) meeting the lady love of his life, Do Do Hee (Uie), again after many years and realising she's pregnant. Together with Byun Kang Chul (Im Seul Ong), also from their high school, they somehow end up taking care of the baby together.

The show can be very very hilarious and I enjoyed it loads though I didn't exactly love it.

Pros:
- Surprisingly good performances by a not-so-experienced cast. I'm naturally a fan of Uie since I love After School, but I've never watched any of her dramas since You're Beautiful. So I was pleasantly surprised by her performance here. She's not super amazing at acting but she somehow managed to make me feel for Do Hee. (That elevator scene guhhh.)

- Do Do Hee's character. I have a thing for prickly porcupine like female characters who wrap their layers of vulnerability under layers of spikes, and Do Do Hee is a great example of that. We started off the drama with Do Hee being an arrogant ass to everyone around her, but with each layer peeled off, we realise that she's really just a lonely girl.

- Byun Kang Chul's arc. He was portrayed as an awful jerk in the first few episodes, but slowly, we got to learn more about him, his insecurities about being gay, and his secret soft heartedness. The way he says Geum Deng is super cute!

- The willingness to explore difficult topics such as single motherhood, rape and homosexuality. Although the closure of the homosexuality arc was pretty disappointing, it was realistic and pretty reflective of the current state of society. That the awful rapist was judged as not guilty was also realistic, unfortunately.

Cons:
- I was one of those who found Hogu a tad annoying. He kept jumping to conclusions (thinking Kang Chul was the dad) and stuck his nose in everyone's business. No fault of Choi Woo Sik's though, as he played the character with such aplomb.

- I also found the comic scenes (more prevalent in the first few eps) kinda too much, but that's a pretty minor quibble.

Favourite scenes:
In Ep 9, when Hogu's parents saw Do Hee entering his room and were hell bent on preventing anyone from entering his room, resorting to holding on to Ho Kyung's leg. LOL!!
Love their super functional and adorable family.

And Do Hee's reaction when she found out that Hogu and essentially EVERYONE was in the scam to make her take action and get back together with him.
